inspiration

Chairs like the one to the left are common in Africa because they are easy to make and portable. They can be moved to follow the shade of a tree and used for working or socializing.

In my design, I didn't want to just copy this vernacular design, but to adapt it to materials I could find in my own area.

materials

I found these chairs and shoe rack for free in my neighborhood. I transported all the materials on my bike to minimize the carbon footprint of my project.

detail

As I was taking apart the chairs, I discovered the mortise and tenon joint of the original construction. I wanted to highlight the joint as a way of the finished piece hinting at its past life.

The chair tells its own story.
