ABOUT

TENNANT CREEK, NT, AUSTRALIA

Tennant Creek, an area where groups of aboriginal people reside, accounts for the highest cancer mortality rate and mortality-to-incidence ratio in Northern Territory Australia. In 2019, an estimated 136 people will die from cancer each day on average. A 20-bed hospital, currently sitting on the site, attends to 3500 people in the town and about 5000 within surrounding cities. The remoteness of this area contributes to the lack of accountable and efficient facilities to treat the residents’ diseases.

The purpose of this study is to examine and explore the different possibilities nature and architectural design can be used to aid in the healing process and incorporated into the spaces where patients, specifically those battling cancer, are being treated. This study also aims to provide a birthing facility, and living quarters for families who want to stay by the side of their patient. By incorporating the culture of Tennant Creek- the arts and history of its people in the design of a cancer center for them, the process these patients  go through and the pain they experience  may be alleviated.
